                                  EXECUTIVE ORDER D—384—2
Relating to Exemptions Under Section 27156
                                         of the Vehicle Code

                                  ENGELHARD CORPORATION
                                  CMX CONVERTER MUFFLER

Pursuant to the authority vested in the Air Resources Board (ARB) by Section 27156 of the Vehicle
Code; and

Pursuant to the authority vested in the undersigned by Sections 39515 and 39516 of the Health and . _
Safety Code and Executive Order G—45—9;

IT IS ORDERED AND RESOLVED: That installation of the CMX Converter Muffler,
manufactured by Engelbard Corporation of 101 Wood Avenue, P.O. Box 770, Iselin, New Jersey
08830—0770, has been found not to reduce the effectiveness of the applicable vehicle pollution
control system, and therefore, the CMX Converter Muffler listed below is exempt from the
prohibitions of Section 27156 of the Vehicle Code for installation on 1983 model—year
Maschinenfabrik Augsburg—Nurmmberg AG (M. A.N.) 2566 MLUM 4—stroke heavy—duty diesel
engines:

               CMX Kit No. Application _
               CMX—0108 M.A.N. Direct Replacement
               CMX—0008 M.A.N. Articulated Street Exhaust

This exemption is based on emission tests conducted by Engelhard Corporation on various 4—stroke
heavy—duty diesel engines. Engelhard Corporation submitted the following federal transient
heavy—duty diesel engine test results for a 1987 model—year Cummins Engine Company, Inc. L—10
270 horsepower engine:

                                      HC CO NOx PM
                                  (grams per brake horsepower—hour)

               Baseline 1.689 2.472 5.468 0.491
               With Converter 1.009 1.906 5.195 0.333

The test data show that the CMX Converter Muffler did not adversely affect the exhaust emissions of
the Curmmins L—10 engine. The same emissions impact is expected when the CMX Converter
Muffler is installed on the engines for which the exemption is requested.
